We carry two types of barrel cactus - Echinocactus and Ferocactus. The two are very closely related. In general, Echinocactus vary in size between small plants up to giants that grow 3 feet wide and 6 feet tall. Most species are subject to scarring at the base of the column, and this can be partially avoided by providing regular water and fertilizer. Echinocactus are easily propagated from seeds, and grow rapidly if they are given abundant water and fertilizer. Most Echinocactus are fairly cold resistant, often to below 20°F. Young Ferocactus are columnar, but as they grow older the ribs form and they start taking the typical barrel shape. Most of the species are solitary, but others are clumping. The flowers are pink, yellow, red or purple depending on the species. The petals often have a midstripe of a darker color. They will take some frost and intense heat. They require full sun, need little water, and excellent drainage. We sell the barrel cactus by measuring the diameter of the plant from spine tip to spine tip. |
