Cholla are part of the Opuntia family. Most Cholla have cylindrical stems which help hold water in the plant . They also have segmented joints, sometimes referred to as pickles. Opuntia is a very large genus of cacti, varying in size from 2 inch tall miniature plants to 100 foot tall trees. Opuntias have normal spines, and they also have thin, barely visible, barbed spines called glochids. These can get stuck in your skin and be very irritating. Opuntias often have large, colorful flowers. The fruit is also large and generally edible. They prefer sandy or coarse well drained soil. |
