There are many columnar species. We carry plants from the genera Carnegiea, Cereus, Cleistocactus, Lophocerus, Neobuxbaumia, Stenocerus, Stetsonia, and Trichocereus. There are about 40 species of Cereus in the Caribbean and South America. They are generally tall, columnar, and easy to grow. The varieties coming from the Caribbean or from the equatorial parts of South America often require heat in winter. They are commonly propagated by cuttings, but can also be grown from seeds (although they grow more slowly). Stenocereus is a genus of columnar cacti native to areas from southwestern USA to Mexico. Some species are low rambling species, while some are large and erect. The genus now contains species that used to be classified in the genera Hertrichocereus and Lemaireocereus. The genus Pachycereus is also sometimes included. The genus Trichocereus was recently added to the genus Echinopsis. It now contains around 120 species of South American cacti. There are also a large number of hybrids in cultivation. |
